Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading

Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is a standards-based 2nd–5th grade curriculum that integrates hands-on inquiry science activities with reading, writing, and discussing as scientists do to provide access to deep science knowledge, academic vocabulary, and powerful skills and strategies in both literacy and science. The Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading team is led by P. David Pearson of the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Education and Jacqueline Barber of the Lawrence Hall of Science and the Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS®) series, and includes educational researchers, science educators, and former classroom teachers.

MARE has teamed with the Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading Program to develop an Earth Science unit for Grades 2-3. Through the Shoreline Science unit, students learn about the properties of sand and other earth materials, erosion, organisms and the environment, and human impact on the environment. They also learn to make inferences and use text features as they read, and to write reports and scientific explanations. They learn and use scientific vocabulary such as habitat, predator, evidence, and compare.
