¡Youth & the Ocean! (OEDG)

¡YO! was funded through the National Science Foundation’s Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG) program. The ¡YO! program was a collaboration between MARE and Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy, an Aspire School in East Oakland, with the aim of enhancing opportunities for underrepresented students in the STEM fields through multiple opportunities to participate in and learn about ocean sciences. Students were able to participate in a weeklong residential ocean sciences research camp at UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, community service activities, paid internships, college preparation and field trips, while meeting other teens with similar interests from Oakland and around the Bay Area. ¡YO! also provided professional development for teachers in the areas of ocean sciences content, inquiry-based teaching approaches, and leading students on field trips that connect with classroom learning. Teachers were able to participate in modeled field and research opportunities as well as a practicum-based coaching academy.
