Communicating Ocean Sciences

MARE developed two innovative Communicating Ocean Sciences courses, COS to K-12 Audiences (COS K-12) & Communicating Ocean Sciences to Informal Audiences (COSIA). These are college courses that introduce undergraduate and graduate students in ocean sciences-related majors to inquiry-based instructional strategies.

Partner institutions that helped to develop and field test COSIA include:

  • Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach, CA) & University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA)
  • Birch Aquarium at Scripps & Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, CA)
  • Hatfield Marine Science Center (Newport, OR) & Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR)
  • Liberty Science Center in Liberty State Park (Jersey City, NJ) & Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ)
  • Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center (Virginia Beach, VA) & Hampton University (Hampton, VA)

Development of COS K-12 was funded by the National Science Foundation under Grant # NSF
Development of COSIA was funded by the National Science Foundation under Grant #ESI-0540417
