Don't Blink Now!: Capturing the Hidden World of Sea Creatures

From School Library Journal: Grade 4-7-- Two attractive volumes that have high visual impact and are good reads as well. Don't Blink Now! concentrates on things in the undersea world that happen too quickly or far too slowly for human observers to see. Through technological advances in underwater photography, these high-speed or slow-motion happenings can be captured and timed to show startling and dangerous events. Accompanied by a readable explanatory text, excellent full-color photos (many in sequence) present vivid vignettes of creatures stalking prey, eluding predators, and sometimes becoming entrees. However, the brief look at nesting gentoo penguins seems oddly out of place. Avid viewers of TV nature programs are well aware of the bright, colorful world of the sunlit coral reef, but few have seen a Night Reef , when daytime inhabitants hide and new actors take the stage, many with excellent nocturnal vision. Superb color photos enrich a clear, informative text creating a picture window into this extraordinary, dark seascape. Endpaper maps indicate world-wide coral reef distribution. Aesthetically pleasing, mentally stimulating, and functional to boot.
